ALLAN STARSKI in an interview for PANI magazine. | 18.08.2025

“I always wanted to make beautiful films. And Andrzej Wajda taught me that you have to make not only beautiful films, but also important ones,” says the great Polish production designer and Oscar winner.
Allan Starski was born on January 1, 1943, in Warsaw. His mother was a dancer, his father an outstanding screenwriter and head of the Iluzjon theater company. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a degree in exhibition design. He made his debut as an independent production designer in Ryszard Ber’s “Chłopcy” (The Boys).
He won an Oscar for Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and a César for Roman Polanski’s The Pianist. He made 14 films with Andrzej Wajda, including Man of Marble, The Maids of Wilko, Danton, and Pan Tadeusz.
In March 2025, he received his fourth Eagle Award, this time for lifetime achievement.
