We present the poster of the film Rzeczy niezbędne, the full-length feature debut of KAMILA TARABURA, which will compete for the Sapphire Lions statuette at the 49th Polish Film Festival in Gdynia.
– How do childhood events affect our adult lives? How to reach the most closely guarded family secrets? These are the questions that Kamila Tarabura – a director awarded at the Warsaw Film Festival, creator of the critically acclaimed series Absolute Beginners – tries to answer in her latest film. The artistic care of the project was taken over by Agnieszka Holland Rzeczy niezbędne is a story about searching for one’s own identity, inspired by the moving reportage Mokradełko by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska, whose protagonists are Ada and Roksana, played by Dagmara Domińczyk, the Polish star of the world hit Sukcesja, and Katarzyna Warnke, who is also the co-author of the script.
A mysterious package falls into the hands of Ada, a renowned journalist living in Hamburg. It is a book with memories written under a pseudonym of a woman molested as a child by her father, with a personal dedication to Ada. The journalist decides to meet the author, who turns out to be her former school friend – Roksana. Together they set off on a journey to the town where they grew up to confront Roksana’s mother, a silent witness to her childhood hell. However, once there, it turns out that her mother stubbornly guards family secrets, maintaining the image of an ideal husband and family. Ada decides to describe this complicated and intriguing story in a report, although for her, in fact, Roksana’s topic is not the most important one on the journey. She also has to come to terms with the demons of the past – they are the ones that prevent her from moving forward in her relationship with her partner, with whom she is in the advanced stages of pregnancy. The emotions between the protagonists thicken, and Ada finds it increasingly difficult to keep her distance and assess what is a lie and what is truth.
The film was produced by ATM Grupa S.A. and RIVA FILMPRODUKTION GMBH in co-production with CANAL+ Polska S.A., ATM System Sp. z o.o. and Wajda Studio Sp. z o.o., co-financed by the Polish Film Institute and FILMFÖRDERUNG Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein GMBH. The film was made in Poland with financial support under the Act on Financial Support for Audiovisual Production, granted by the Polish Film Institute from the funds of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage.
